ICYMI: Another attack on bitcoin coming from Congress (bill would ban "aggregated transactions," attempts to make "concealment" of data a crime, proposes freezing bank accounts, and would require individual users of "digital currencies" to be regulated to the same level as banks).

Edit: Thanks for the gold, anon redditor, and thanks everyone who commented and contributed, I was surprised to log in and see this thing had shot to the top of bitcoin. Please continue to write your legislators about this and similar legislation, and of course, keep using bitcoin.
The whole text of their proposal: https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/senate-bill/1241/text
If in the U.S.: Write your representatives to oppose S.1241: https://democracy.io/
Write to Administration to demand a veto of S.1241 or anything like it if it were ever to reach the White House for signature or veto: https://www.whitehouse.gov/contact
An opposition letter to S.1241 has been developed by the Bitcoin Foundation, but I don't think it goes far enough. I think any organizational opposition letter (e.g. from EFF, Bitcoin Foundation, or other org) should call for total and absolute death by fire of S.1241 or anything like it. (See second season of Stranger Things if you have any question about what I mean about death by fire.) https://bitcoinfoundation.org/redraft-%c2%a71241-combating-money-laundering-act-2017/
(The following is my recent letter over the weekend sent to the U.S. Administration regarding S.1241, requesting that a position be taken on the bill to announce that a veto would be provided if the legislation were to be advanced. Please feel free to copy and paste from it or develop your own.)
This is regarding S.1241 - the so-called "Combating Money Laundering, Terrorist Financing, and Counterfeiting Act of 2017."
This proposal is a sick joke. Its proponents have given a fancy name to something that simply put, is designed to attack the American worker and would do absolutely zero in relation to what the title implies.
The bill would brings cryptocurrencies under the umbrella of civil forfeiture. It also would require the DHS to provide, within 18 months of ratification, a report on strategies to detect cryptocurrencies at border crossings, which would be impossible since there is no technology that can do that.
I can put a bitcoin on a paper wallet or memorize seed words in my brain that represent a whole wallet and cross borders physically or virtually, then later reproducing the wallet at will. This law would attempt to prohibit me from exercising my memory to access my resources across borders, a ridiculous approach to finance. Finance is of course cross-border and private.
Section 13 of the proposed Act is just one particularly vicious aspect of it, constituting nothing less than an attack upon the American worker.
Sec. 13 of S.1241 seeks to define anyone issuing, redeeming, or cashing bitcoin as a financial institution, requiring them to comply with the Bank Secrecy Act, 31 U.S.C. §5312 and requiring INDIVIDUALS AND SMALL BUSINESSES to adopt the same formal reporting procedures as financial institutions for the purpose of reporting suspicious financial transactions.
In effect this Act would treat INDIVIDUALS as though they were BANKS and impose the same financial licensing and reporting obligations on them.
Please communicate to those who are pushing S.1241 forward that it will get nothing but a Veto.
Thank you.

Bitcoin for real

In late 2014, years before the recent brouhaha over Coinbase's latest debacle in re. their decision to utilize someone from HT and all the negative implications of that - I stopped using CoinBase and BitPay.
Note: my original post could not be made in cryptocurrency nor in bitcoin until I self-censored by removing explicit proper spelling of Coinbase and Bitpay. This original post used alternative words to circumvent subreddit limitations on posting about these firms. This post has now had the spelling changed to refer to these firms by the proper spelling of their names.
https://np.reddit.com/Bitcoin/comments/2kmpmopen_letter_to_bitcoin_businesses_why_im_closing/
The main reason for me leaving? Coinbase, Bitpay, Bitstamp and a ton of other companies at the time in 2014 openly and explicitly announced their support for the Windhover group's 'Proportionate Enforcement and Risk Based Regulation,' which contained a terrible pill suggesting that all identity - even future identities based solely on bitcoin blockchain, or similar technologies - should be deemed under sole purview and control of governments.
Your identity, of course is regulated and monitored. Any country's passport or state DL is a classic example. But the state no longer has sovereign control and monopoly over money. Why should it for identity either?
This is to speak out against exchanges or brokerages that don't respect our agency and ability to create our own identity. This is a ramble on why we shouldn't use Coinbase, Bitpay, Stamp, or other exchanges that fundamentally have acted against people's best interest, not once or twice but persistently over years.
So what transpired then?

Biicoin for real: a little history of what transpired after ditching the worst exchanges and brokerages

In late 2014, years before the recent brouhaha over Coinbase's latest debacle in re. their decision to utilize someone from HT and all the negative implications of that - I stopped using CoinBase and Bitpay.

The main reason for me leaving? Coinbase, Bitpay, Bitstamp and a ton of other companies at the time in 2014 openly and explicitly announced their support for (by singing on to) the Windhover group's 'Proportionate Enforcement and Risk Based Regulation' concept for the industry, which contained a terrible pill suggesting that all identity - even future identities based solely on bitcoin blockchain, or similar technologies - should be deemed under sole purview and control of governments. You can see details and a link to what this Windhover proposal was at the old 2014 discussion, np link above.

BlockFi is growing exponentially. Who the Eff is taking out a loan from blockfi? (x-post from /r/Bitcoin)

submitted by ASICmachine to CryptoCurrencyClassic [link] [comments]

Not trying to be the bad news bear of r/Bitcoin, but Dababneh just managed to pass an anti Bitcoin bill. Here are details.

The basics of this:
Dababneh's approach, long reviled and opposed by basically everyone (including, but not limited to the EFF, Bitcoin Foundation, and tens of thousands of vocal opponents across California) led to his "CA Bitlicense," AB 1326 being defeated twice in 2015 and 2016 (withdrawn, ordered to inactive, and then killed ultimately in 2016). Not learning, Dababneh, urged probably by his friends in the banking industry, introduced AB 1123 in 2017, which has the same language essentially as before (the "new" CA bitlicense proposal). Thus far it has been defeated in Committee but it may need to be defeated again as the bill is not formally dead yet - thus we literally may need to organize a fourth time to defeat CA's bitlicense.
However, unbeknownst to many bitcoin users, Dababneh got a bill passed that was anti-bitcoin that did not mention bitcoin or "virtual currency" or "digital currency" terminology at all. Instead, Dababneh got his bill AB 1460 passed by the California legislature quite easily.
You can see the votes here: legislature.ca.gov/faces/billVotesClient.xhtml?bill_id=201720180AB1460
The text of the bill is here: https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=201720180AB1460
This seemingly innocent bill, like so much of Dababneh's nonsense which he does for the banking industry, has an interesting provision buried in it. It states that "Any fiduciary funds, as defined in Section 1733, received as cash, lawful money of the United States, or freely tradeable currency of any foreign government, by any person licensed, whether under a permanent license, restricted license, temporary license, or certificate of convenience, to act in any of the capacities specified in Section 1733, shall comply with Section 1734, but shall initially be maintained in a trust account in a bank or savings and loan association in California, licensed by the State of California or the United States government and insured by the FDIC."
(Edit: This would apply to, under California Insurance Code Sec. 1733, "All funds received by any person acting as a licensee under this chapter, Chapter 5A (commencing with Section 1759), Chapter 6 (commencing with Section 1760), or Chapter 7 (commencing with Section 1800), as premium or return premium on or under any policy of insurance or undertaking of bail, are received and held by that person in his or her fiduciary capacity." This would not apply to BitcoinIRAs or any kinds of funds (including bitcoins) used for any other purposes, but you can see where the State is clearly intruding into the space of how people wish to hold and manage their funds.)
Of course, the bill does delete the reference or requirement to the fiduciary funds being in a custodian or trust account in California (which already existed in law) and the definitions for a bank and a savings association and would require evidence of the funds to be maintained at all times in a trust account in a bank or savings and loan association within any state of the United States, but it's still silly, because we are moving to a world where people shouldn't have to have any requirement to hold any of their funds in a bank. And quite frankly it's unlikely that people will.
If you thought those words "lawful money" were easy to miss you were right. Note in 2013-2014, a law was passed in California that allowed people to (if they wanted to) use bitcoin (and other similar things) as "lawful money." The text of that bill (now law) is here: https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=201320140AB129
TL;DR - Dababneh is a shill for banks. If you want to, go to Governor Brown's website at https://govapps.gov.ca.gov/gov39mail/ and ask him to veto AB 1460. (There is in fact still time to do so as of my posting of this item in bitcoin.)

When BitCoin is outlawed, can there be any doubt that we are slaves?

The Electronic Frontier Foundation just stopped accepting BitCoins for donations. While the reasons for this move are fuzzy, I suspect that there are people within the EFF that know what is going on behind the curtain.
Everyone is predicting governments will outlaw BitCoin in the near future. My question to those who believe they are living in free and democratic societies is: How can you believe you believe you are free if you cannot choose your mode of exchange?
EDIT: Grammar correction.

Last call for Dragon*Con!

I'll be at Dragon*Con in around 14 hours. Is anyone else going, and wanting to meet up?
I plan to give away up to 3 BTC to people who show up to the EFF Bitcoin session (Saturday 1:30) who have no coin, but for the rest of us, how about we meet up for dinner? Maybe even host a Satoshi Square?
I'll pay the fiat, if you send me the BTC!
Edit: I also am bringing some original issue (with spelling error) Casascius coins, as well as the current generation, so feel free to mug me whenever.

Tips :
Tip #1 : If you're in a country that hate piracy like USA or Germany ( i think Germany have dmca or something ?? idk ) etc. stay away from torrent and stay away from http sites
( download Https Everywhere extension and enable encrypt all sites eligible option by pressing on the icon of https everywhere ) even if your browser included with it . because it will warn you if the site is http...
Tip #2 : FBI will not raid your house ( because fbi will not waste there time on you )

Tip #6 The MegaThread is your OTHER BEST FRIEND if you want an rom head to the megathread and press ctrl + F and search ;)
Tip #7 DON'T DO NOT OPEN ANY ANY ANY .MSI .EXE/.DMG/.DEB or ANY OTHER FILE THAT you CAN OPEN WITHOUT AN EMULATOR THE FILE IT'S 2000% A VIRUS ( EXCEPT WHEN you DOWNLOAD RETRO ARCH [ or any other emulator OF COURSE ] ) AND DON'T OPEN .BAT FILES IT CAN DELETE SYSTEM32 FILE AND IT'S ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT FILES IN WINDOWS
Tip #8 Emulating is Legal but Downloading ROMs is ILEGAL ( OF COURSE IF you're LIVING IN A COUNTRY THAT DMCA IS A HOLY THING ) ;-)
Tip #9 If you're suspicious of a file u can scan it on VirusTotal or Hybird Analysis ( you need to upload the file because it will open it on a vm in there sever ).
Tip #10 I recommend using a controller if you have a xbox controller just connect it to your pc and you're good to go BUT if you have a dualshock controller (ps controller )
use DS4 Windows ( if you have a windows pc ) ( I Know it's the fork bc the og creator stopped working on it in 2016 or somthing like that )
or any other controller .
Tip #11 If you download a rom and it came in .rar .zip .7z .r001( if the rom came with multiple files like .r001 .r002 .r003... you need to extract just a one file) etc. you can use 7-ZIP or Winrar ( don't worry 40 days trial doesn't end ).

Tip #12 if the rom came in this order rom.rar.exe don't think to open it and if you hide the extension file from showing from the file name it will show like rom.rar but it's actually a .exe or .dmg etc.

Tip #13 if you have a linux pc or a mac that doesn't mean you will not get infected even Temple OS have malwares ( if you don't what's a malware is just search ).

Dude what the eff is going on? This is why bitcoin is performing so badly.

I actually use BTC to buy shit and starting about last week, I've tried to make 3 different purchases. Using coinbase. The transaction goes through, it gets all its confirmations, the money leaves my fucking account, and the invoice will say I haven't paid. The vendor too will say nope, did not get anything. And there it is on my statement, the money is gone. Where the fuck did it go. That's bullshit.

Bitcoin Cash needs support on coinpayments.net. There is a public vote (proceeds mostly to EFF)!

https://www.coinpayments.net/vote
According to their site:
Over 369,500 vendors across 182 different countries
This could be a good way to unlock Bitcoin Cash utility.
https://www.coinpayments.net/help-charity-vote
In fact, it looks like proceeds from voting have recently been split 50/50 between EFF and the Water Project.
EDIT: This community is the greatest! Thanks to all donors who boosted Bitcoin Cash to the number 1 spot on the public coin vote. This should mean that Bitcoin Cash is next up to be implemented!!!
